6 Reasons Why A Strange Smell Is Coming From Your Air Conditioner

Home » air conditioning units

strange smell

When you turn your air conditioner on for the season, you may find that a strange smell has developed since you used it last. If this is the case, you’ll want to remove the smell so you can enjoy the air conditioner for the remainder of the summer.

Determining what the cause of the smell is might be more complex than it seems because there are many potential causes. If you aren’t sure where the smell is coming from, you may want to consult with our professionals at Genuine Comfort about what might be causing it.

1. Your Coils Are Dirty

If you have used your furnace all winter long but have not changed the air filter throughout the season, the dirt, dust, and debris on the filter may have gotten on the coils. As you begin to use your air conditioner, the dirty coils cooling may start to give off a strange smell. This smell will go away over time.

If you get your furnace serviced every year, you can ask your technician to look at the coils and drip pan to see if they can do anything to flush out the debris. This flushing of debris may expedite the process of removing the smell, though it still may take some time.

2. There’s Mold Or Mildew

If the strange smell of your air conditioner is musty, mold or mildew may have formed in or near your unit. If there is excess moisture and a problem with drainage, it is the perfect setting for mold and mildew to grow.

If you suspect mold or mildew near your air conditioner, you can start by investigating around the unit. You may want to call a professional if you don’t see any visible mold near or on the unit. The technician can look in the unit to see any internal development and suggest a course of action to remove it and prevent mold or mildew development.

3. There’s A Gas Leak

If the strange smell from your air conditioner smells like gas or skunk, and the unit is gas-powered, you likely have a gas leak. If this is the case, you should turn your air conditioner off immediately, open a window to air out the gas and leave your home.

From there, you need to call a professional to fix the leak. Gas leaks pose a significant risk to your family’s safety, so stay away until a professional has repaired it. Because this is an emergency service, your HVAC service provider should send a technician out immediately to assess and repair your leak.

4. Other Fluids Are Leaking

strange smell

Not all leaks will be as dangerous as a gas leak. If the strange smell from your air conditioner smells similar to exhaust fumes, it could be other fluids from the unit’s engine.

You’ll need to contact a professional if you believe you have a leak in your air conditioner. The technician can take a look at the unit. If they find a leak, they should be able to fix it quickly. Until a technician fixes the leak, the strange smell will persist.

5. Something Is Broken

There is a chance that the strange smell coming from your air conditioner smells like gunpowder, a part in your air conditioner may be broken. A professional can replace any broken parts and alleviate the smell.

You should regularly schedule maintenance to preserve each part of your air conditioner. If you speak to a professional before turning on your air conditioner for the season, they can assess the state of your air conditioner and make suggestions to save you time and frustration.

6. There’s An Animal Body In It

If the strange smell coming from your air conditioner is reminiscent of rotten eggs, there may be a dead animal in the unit. During winter, small animals, like rodents and birds, may take shelter inside your air conditioner. If they are unable to get out, you may have to deal with the smell of their body in your air conditioner.

If you suspect a dead animal body is in your air conditioner, call a professional to remove the body. The technician may also find gaps the animal used to get in, preventing this problem from persisting.

air conditioner is blowing hot air

If you go to sleep with cool air blowing out of your air conditioner, only to wake up to warm air, you may feel frustrated and not understand what happened. A malfunctioning air conditioner can make getting comfortable in your home difficult.

If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, you’ll want to know everything you can do to troubleshoot the problem before calling an expert. There are several steps you can take to determine what your air conditioner’s problem is before reaching out to our team at Genuine Comfort for help.

1. Your Filter Is Clogged

Oftentimes, the simplest solution is the right one, and in many cases, the problem when your air conditioner is blowing warm air is that your filter is clogged. If you haven’t changed your filter all winter and have just started using your air conditioner again, you need to replace your filter. You should replace your air filter every 30 to 90 days with any HVAC system. If you don’t change your filter often enough, it will fill with dust, dirt, and debris brought in by the system.

With a clogged air filter, the airflow to your air conditioner is restricted. If there isn’t adequate airflow, your air conditioner’s coils will begin to freeze, preventing it from performing at its best. If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, replace the air filter, and it should start working correctly.

2. Problems With Your Thermostat

air conditioner is blowing warm air

Sometimes, when your air conditioner is blowing warm air, the problem is incredibly straightforward. If you’re trying to solve this problem without the help of an expert, you should start by checking your thermostat. You will want to ensure your unit is set to cool. If you have more than one thermostat, one may be set to cool in one section of your home while the other is still set to heat.

Next, you’ll want to check that your thermostat is set to auto. If your thermostat is set to on, it may circulate warmer air instead of cooling the house. Finally, you need to check the batteries on your thermostat. If the batteries are dead, you will need to replace them before you can control your air conditioner again.

3. You’re Low On Refrigerant

If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, there is a chance your unit is low on refrigerant. This lack of refrigerant usually indicates that your air conditioner has a leak. The leak is generally located in the coils of your unit and will be accompanied by a hissing sound. Your coils may even freeze over. If you are low on refrigerant or dealing with a leak, your unit won’t reach your preferred temperature. To handle this, you’ll need to call an expert to help. They will come in, locate the leak, and refill your refrigerant. After that is done, your unit should begin blowing cool air again.

4. There’s A Broken Part

This one might be harder to diagnose without the help of an expert, but there is a possibility that your air conditioner is blowing warm air because there is a broken part in your unit. You may determine on your own that some parts are broken. If your air conditioner is on and your fan isn’t moving, you can determine that it is broken.

Whether it is a broken fan or something deeper within the unit, you’ll want to get in touch with a professional. They’ll be able to quickly determine the problem within your air conditioner and may even catch other issues before they become more significant.

5. You Tripped A Breaker

If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, there is a chance that you’ve tripped a breaker. A tripped breaker should be a relatively easy fix. You will need to find your circuit breaker. Once you have determined which of the circuits connects to your air conditioner, flip the switch back. This should fix your problem outright.

However, there is a chance that this will happen again. If your air conditioner continues to trip the breaker, your unit may have a more significant problem. At that point, your best course of action is to reach out to a professional for help. It will save you a headache and time.

air conditioner is blowing hot air Freezing up Genuine Comfort Heating and Air

As the summer season begins and the temperatures climb, you’ll start turning to your air conditioner for comfort. But, if you haven’t maintained your air conditioner, there is a possibility that it may begin freezing up.

A frozen air conditioner can become damaged quickly if left unattended. You should know the causes of a frozen air conditioner, signs your air conditioner is frozen, and what to do to protect it from further damage.

How Do I Know My Air Conditioner Is Freezing Up

The most obvious sign that your air conditioner is freezing up is visible ice on the side of your unit. But there are other signs to look for if you suspect your unit is frozen. The signs that your unit is freezing up include the following.

  • Your unit is blowing hot air.
  • You hear a hissing sound.
  • There’s water pooling around your unit.
  • Your electric bill is higher than average.
  • The coils inside the unit are frozen.

What Is Causing It To Freeze Up?

To protect your air conditioner, you’ll want to know what can cause it to freeze up. There are several factors that can lead to your unit freezing up, including the following:

  • Dirty Filter: Airflow is essential for the life of your air conditioner. If the airflow to your unit is blocked, the coils might get too cold and freeze up.
  • Dirty Coils: If dust, dirt, and grime cover the coils in your air conditioner, the airflow can get blocked and may freeze the unit.
  • Damaged Or Broken Blower: With many moving parts, your air conditioner may be freezing up due to a damaged or broken part.
  • Low Refrigerant: If you see any leaks coming from your unit, you may be low on refrigerant, which will cause the pressure in your unit to drop and may cause it to freeze over.

What To Do Now That It’s Frozen

Because your air conditioner may freeze up for many reasons, there are a couple of steps you’ll want to take at home to try to fix the problem. To protect your air conditioner while it’s freezing up, you’ll want to follow each of these steps:

  1. Turn Off Your Unit: If you suspect your air conditioner is frozen, you first want to turn it off. Leaving a frozen air conditioner on can damage parts you hadn’t previously had problems with, creating an even bigger mess on your plate. Turn it off to prevent further damage.
  1. Check Your Filter: The most common cause of a frozen air conditioner is a dirty air filter. You’ll want to check your filter to ensure it isn’t dirty. Your air filter should be changed every 30 to 60 days if you are allergy-free. If you’re dealing with allergies, you’ll want to replace it more often. You’ll need to ensure you’re replacing it with the correct filter. Take a look at the filter which was in your unit. Many air filters have the dimensions written on the side, so you should take a look and note the size before getting a new one.
  1. Turn The Cool Off, Fan On, And Let It Run: You’ll want to get the ice off your unit. To do this, turn the cool setting off on your air conditioner, turn the fan on, and let it run. It will need to run for three to four hours to remove any built-up ice, though it may take up to 24 hours in some extreme cases. Don’t turn the heat on in your unit just to get the ice off. If you turn the heat on, you’ll end up with a large puddle of water around the unit. Staying solely on the fan will slowly remove the ice, preventing a larger mess.
  1. Turn The Cooling Back On: After the unit has fully thawed, turn the cool air back on. Let it run for a while and check on it sporadically. If you return and find ice is starting to form again, the problem might be more significant than a simple fix.
  1. Call A Technician: If you’ve followed the instructions above and your air conditioner is still frozen, you’ll want to call a technician to look at it. If the steps above haven’t helped remove ice build-up, the problem may be more significant than a blocked filter. A technician will look into your unit to diagnose the issue, ultimately saving you the headache.
