Office. Play room. Entertainment room. The bonus room is often a place in your home where you have additional room to do an activity. This activity can range from a TV room (as in the case of an entertainment room) or an office where you can work from. In this article, we’ll talk about heating and cooling for the bonus room in your home.
What is a bonus room?
As we mentioned before, a bonus room is a space in your home that can be used for different purposes or activities. Defining a bonus room is tricky based on different states in the United States. However, one thing that sets a bonus room apart from a bedroom or other areas of your home like a closet or hallway is that a bedroom needs to have a specific sizing to legally be considered a bedroom. So, that’s why a bonus room is called a bonus room rather than a bedroom.
HVAC for the bonus room
Now that you know what a bonus room is, let’s talk about heating and cooling in this area of your house. For heating and cooling in your bonus room, you’ll need two things depending on certain factors that we’ll go over. Those two things are a ductless split and/or a ceiling mounted air conditioner.
What is a ductless split system and where is it used?
A ductless split is a mini split-system that functions as an air conditioner. It’s used in areas where there are “non-ducted heating systems.” What that means is it’s an air condition system for individual rooms. This ductless split connects to an outdoor compressor.
A ductless split system is great to use in a bonus room for a variety of reasons. For one, you can regulate the temperature in each room. Additionally, it’s an energy-efficient system when it’s compared to other systems. While some disadvantages of a ductless system include the cost and appearance of it, it’s important to note two things. For one, because it’s energy efficient, you’re saving money in the long run. Additionally, a bonus room can’t be used to its full potential if it’s too hot or cold in there. So while a ductless split system may be visible in your room, it’s helping you maximize that room.
Finally, a ductless split system means that you can have a comfortable temperature in your bonus room. This makes it easier to use it and feel comfortable in it.
What is a ceiling cassette and where is it used?
If your bonus room is near the attic or in the attic, we would highly recommend getting a ceiling cassette. A ceiling cassette is a type of ductless indoor system. As the name suggests, the air handler is placed on the ceiling. With a ceiling cassette, you get an air conditioner release from a grille. For more information about ceiling cassettes, read this.
