An HVAC system is something that we count on every day, throughout the day to keep our homes comfortable. But once it starts to not perform up to your standards, it may be time to look into improving or replacing your system. If you are planning on replacing your HVAC system, here are some pointers to consider in preparation of replacement. Or if your HVAC system is still working, evaluate it by asking yourself these questions below:
1- Are your energy costs consistently too high?
If your heating and cooling costs have gone up, but you haven’t had an increase in energy usage, then it might be because of your HVAC system is not performing as well as it should be. A poorly operating HVAC system runs more frequently, which in turn costs more without having the desired cooling or heating effect. Month after month, your utility bills will increase without the HVAC working properly, and it can slowly happen over time. Before you know it, you have paid double or even triple for several months, and it keeps adding up. Keep a close watch on your usage and montly bill amounts.
2- How old is your HVAC system?
If your current HVAC system is very old or outdated (ten years or more), then you should consider replacing it with a new system. If your unit is older than 15 years, then you most definitely should be replacing it. A lot of the newer systems come with Energy Star ratings, and are a lot safer, cheaper and more energy efficient than older models. Technology is always improving, and after 10 years or more, there are many improvements that will be better for your home with a new or updated HVAC system.
3- Is your home not keeping as warm or as cool as you’d like?
This is one of the key signs that your HVAC system needs to be replaced. Especially if you have been keeping up to date with tune-ups and filter changes throughout the time that you’ve had it. But before jumping into purchasing a new HVAC system, make sure you remember when the last tune-up was, and when the last time the filter was changed. And, if the thermostat is working properly.
4- Does your HVAC stop working frequently or have other maintenance issues?
If you have spent too much time and money on service calls and other parts simply because your HVAC system keeps having problems, it might be more cost efficient to start planing on a replacement.
With a new HVAC system, be sure to have it installed safely, and keep it up to regulation standards. Remember that there are also other risks involved, such as carbon monoxide leaks from a poorly installed HVAC system. But aside from all other safety concerns, you also want it to work great, and save you money in the long run. Also, make certain that you have a great warranty on it to cover repairs, services and other parts for a good length of time.
